HCJB Global is a Christian organisation
providing healthcare, media, and
disaster relief in many places around
the world. Their UK
base is in
Bradford.
HCJB was the first ever Christian
missionary radio station. It was set-up
in
Ecuador in
South America in 1931.
As a result of the terribly destructive
earthquake in
Haiti
on January 12, the organisation sent out
a medical team to the country. They
partner with Samaritans Purse, another
Christian relief organisation, and HCJB
were one of the first teams out in
Haiti
supporting those affected by the
disaster.
They have had teams travelling in and
out of the country ever since. There is
a group of doctors, nurses, and
construction workers in the country at
the moment. They are working in the
capital in a place called Cite` Soleil
in a well-known dangerous area.
The mission’s donors in the
UK
have been able to raise £45,000 for
their work in
Haiti.
Chief Executive Colin Lowther says,
“Some of the money has gone to buy 180
off-road wheelchairs which will be ideal
for the aftermath of the earthquake over
there. We are really excited about
being able to help in these ways.”
Mr. Lowther says there has also been a
spiritual awakening amongst the horrific
chaos. “Some of the churches were
filling up on Sundays,” he said. Many
Haitians have started going to church
and have become Christians.
The teams sent to the Latin American
country also experienced stories of
hope. Colin Lowther says, “There were
some incredible scenes of devastation,
but people were surviving in the midst
of that.”
The country was one of the poorest in
the world before the earthquake, and the
people of
Haiti
will be rebuilding their lives for years
ahead, but there have been big changes.
For example the water systems are
starting to get back to normal.
